Harvey has struck a strategic partnership with LexisNexis to integrate its legal content and citation tools directly into the Harvey platform.

The deal gives Harvey users access to primary sources of law courtesy of LexisNexis and will be a "valuable differentiator" for the startup.

Harvey, the OpenAI-backed legal AI frontrunner, has announced a strategic partnership with LexisNexis in a move that could significantly sharpen its competitive edge in the fast-moving legal AI space.

The tie-up gives Harvey’s users access to LexisNexis’ trusted trove of legal content and primary case law directly within the Harvey platform.

Until now, Harvey relied on sourcing data from public legal databases. The new integration marks a clear upgrade in data quality and reliability, allowing users to generate legal answers grounded in authoritative sources from LexisNexis. Initially, this will be focused on US law only.

From rival to partner

Though LexisNexis offers its own generative AI tools under the Lexis+ AI banner, the alliance points to a more collaborative approach with Harvey. LexisNexis owner RELX’s venture arm REV took part in Harvey’s $300 million Series D round in February - an early sign that a deeper relationship was brewing.

Harvey’s UK law firm customers already include A&O Shearman and Macfarlanes, and the startup has raised more than $400 million to date. It was valued at $3 billion in February and, as reported by Reuters in May, is now understood to be eyeing a $5 billion valuation in a fresh $250 million round.

Why it matters

In a hyper-competitive market, access to high-quality, proprietary data could be a key differentiator for Harvey as it goes head-to-head with rivals like Legora.

"This is certainly a significant deal and will be a valuable differentiator", said Peter Duffy, head of legal tech consultancy TITANS. "It will be curious to see the pricing model for customers to access this data, and exactly how the data and functionality are surfaced within the Harvey platform."

LexisNexis' integration into Harvey is expected later this year.
