Eversheds Sutherland is opening an office in Palo Alto, its fourth base in California and strengthening its tech litigation capabilities on the West Coast.
The office will be led by Bradford Newman, a trade secrets and tech disputes specialist who joins from Baker McKenzie.
Eversheds Sutherland has announced the opening of a new office in Silicon Valley, marking its fourth base in California and deepening its offering to US tech clients in the region.
The new Palo Alto base will be led by partner Bradford Newman, who joins from Baker McKenzie and will head the firm’s US complex technology disputes practice. Newman specialises in trade secrets cases involving emerging technology including AI, blockchain and decentralised finance.
Before joining Bakers in 2020, he spent 15 years at Paul Hastings, where he helped build out its Palo Alto presence, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
West Coast expansion
The opening builds on Eversheds’ San Francisco launch in 2022 and existing offices in Sacramento and San Diego.
It also comes amid a broader surge in West Coast expansion by major firms. CMS opened in Silicon Valley in March 2024, Sidley launched in San Diego last August and Weil opened in both LA and San Francisco last summer. Meanwhile, DAC Beachcroft debuted in Los Angeles at the start of this year.
Additionally, Freshfields invested in the region in May by adding top dealmaker Aly Love from Debevoise as co-head of its US tech and life sciences M&A practice, based in Silicon Valley.
What they said
Michael Bahar and Kym Kochis, co-heads of Eversheds’ US litigation practice, said Newman’s "reputation as a tenacious and forward-thinking litigator, proven builder and consummate team player, combined with his deep ties to Silicon Valley and the TMT sector, makes him the ideal cornerstone for our West Coast litigation strategy and the launch of our new office."
Lino Mendiola, co-CEO of Eversheds, said "Bradford’s arrival and the opening of an office in Silicon Valley represent a significant step in our commitment to support our clients’ needs in key innovation hubs."
Newman said "I’m thrilled to join Eversheds Sutherland at such a pivotal time. The opportunity to found and build out a Silicon Valley office, and to lead a world-class litigation team in California, backed by a global platform and a forward-looking leadership team, is incredibly exciting."
