Freshfields builds New York bench with Paul Weiss AI partner hire

Freshfields has hired litigation partner Anna Gressel from Paul Weiss in New York to co-head its global AI practice.
The firm has made strong inroads in the US hiring dozens of laterals from elite firms in recent years and winning major M&A mandates.
Freshfields has continued its impressive New York momentum, bringing on board litigation partner Anna Gressel from Paul Weiss as global co-head of its AI practice.
Gressel is a specialist in AI regulation. The firm said she advises some of the world’s leading AI labs and technology developers on issues ranging from safety and liability to privacy, IP and consumer protection.
US momentum
Her arrival follows a strong run of US growth for Freshfields and a fast-growing reputation as one of the leading advisers in New York’s ultra competitive legal market.
The firm has recently landed a number of major M&A mandates, including advising Merck on its $10 billion acquisition of Verona Pharma, and acting for home improvement giant Lowe’s on its $8.8 billion deal for Foundation Building Materials.
Freshfields’ New York expansion is widely seen as the most successful US build-out by a UK-headquartered firm, adding a wave of laterals in recent years from elite names including Cravath and Davis Polk. Gressel’s move from another New York heavyweight suggests that trend is continuing.
