Latham & Watkins has promoted 40 associates to partner globally, effective January 2026 - up from 24 last year and 34 in 2023, but below the 44 recorded in 2021 and 2022.

Seven of the new partners are in London, where the firm has enjoyed a strong run of mandates this year despite a string of finance partner departures to Sidley Austin.

Latham has promoted 40 associates to partner, including seven in London, in its largest global round since 2022 as the firm continues to expand its partnership following a strong year in the City.

The autumn promotions mark a significant increase on the 24 promoted this time last year and the 34 the year before, though shy of the 44 associate-to-partner promotions in both 2021 and 2022.

Alongside the partner promotions, 56 associates were promoted to counsel, including 10 in London. It follows a February round that saw five London counsel made up to partner.

London promotions

The London promotions span banking and private credit, M&A and private equity, capital markets, and data and technology.

Who made partner in London:

  • Brett Carr - Emerging Companies & Growth
  • Chris Cox - Mergers & Acquisitions / Private Equity
  • Calum Docherty - Data & Technology Transactions
  • Tamryn Gallagher - Banking & Private Credit
  • Jonathan Ritson-Candler - Capital Markets
  • Harriet Stephenson - Mergers & Acquisitions / Private Equity
  • Julie Van der Meersche - Banking & Private Credit

A year of momentum

The promotions cap a strong year for Latham’s London office, which has advised on a series of big-ticket European mandates.

Those include the $50 billion merger of Anglo American and Teck Resources, acting for DoorDash on its £2.9 billion takeover of Deliveroo and advising Verisure on its €13.7 billion Nasdaq Stockholm debut - Europe’s largest-ever private equity-backed IPO and the largest IPO in Sweden since 2000.

The momentum comes despite a major raid on the firm’s finance ranks by Sidley Austin in London. Over the past year, at least nine partners and dozens of associates across leveraged finance and capital markets have defected to Sidley amid reports of disquiet over Latham’s new "super points" equity band for top partners.
